1979 Marshall JMP 2203 Mk II Master Lead 100w Tag

15 Oct AC/DC’s “Riff Raff”, Studio Version, Schaffer-Vega Diversity Series

This one took me circa four days to prepare, before final recording that is. I have been trying with the microphone position (Neumann U47) and with mild – really just a bit – equalization.

The microphone used in this album – or the microphones – was a Neumann U47 FET, a different microphone to the Neumann U 47 tube version, which is older than the FET design. (more…)

07 Oct Powerage Era: AC/DC’s “Gimme A Bullet” (with SoloDallas Solo)

NOW I’m starting to have fun.

This video is the second one of the “debunking” series with the Schaffer-Vega Diversity.

As with the previous one, “Back in Black”, I intend to cover quite a few songs with the exact same equipment they used back then, or the closest approximation I have available.

I used the Schaffer-Vega here only on the solo  – which is my own thingnote – as I believe was on most albums since 1978 onward. I love the SVDS: did you know? (more…)

23 Aug A Passion For Gear

The Beast 2

A passion for gear. Now before I get into the fun facts and knowledge about my gear. I would like to say few things about how I got to the point I am at today.

My guitar and gear journey started about 7 years or so ago. Before this I had no or little knowledge of a guitar or how to play one for that matter. It was a much older friend who inspired me to play and was just fascinated when watching him play and never thought I would have ever accomplished what I have achieved as of today. Guitar was not something that came natural to me like others but that never stopped me and I was determined to succeed. (more…)

13 Jun High Wattage – AC/DC’s Marshall amps through the years (Work in Progress – UPDATED: Back in Black era uncovered)

Main Research: André Kozuma

Edits and additional info, SoloDallas

So, hello again everyone! 🙂

Here I am again with another article.

This all is mostly things we already know, but I felt that we needed a place to put it all together and make it easier to consult rather than have to search though all the other pages to find the info on the comments or that sort of thing.

What I plan to do is a real Index for everything AC/DC related (gear-wise), but mostly the amps. Perhaps we can cover all of AC/DC’s history, but I can’t do this alone. I would like to ask every member of this community a little help. If you find any bit of info, good pics, videos, whatever it is, that you think it’s interesting, share with us, so we can oficially post it here.

So, let’s start with the amps.

Early Years – High Voltage, TNT, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1973 – 1976)

05 Jan The Vintage Marshall Guide

This is my first article here at Solodallas.com. I hope this can be useful to all of you who are interested in buying old Marshall amps.

(SoloDallas’ note: it is with pleasure that I introduce to you our already very well known friend Andrè, aka  Jaiminho Pagina: he’s now a contributor of SoloDallas.net!)

(NOTE – I did some updates at the 2203/ 2204 section of the article ~JaiminhoPagina)

Before starting, I must warn you that acquiring vintage gear can be really risky. You can end up buying something that is not what you expected or even something that is damaged or modded beyond repair. So, always keep your eyes open for “fishy” deals, look for information, and always ask for high definition photos (especially from the interior of the amps – the circuit, the tubes and transformers) to make sure everything is right. If you don’t have much experience (myself included, to be honest :P), I recommend asking help from the members here of the community. Post a link of the desired amp on the “Ebay Watch Post”, so we can help analyzing it. (more…)

Update: Adding Simone’s song backing track:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Update: adding another little thing I did for the wife’s birthday (next sunday). Used the ’50s Les Paul for all of it, and the Gibson “Dusk Tiger” for the acustic parts (piezo only).

I remember many times people asking me what were my originals like. This is what I have in mind usually.

19 Oct Playing with self-made backing track – Updated

Little update as of Oct. the 19th 2010.

I am always experimenting as soon as I have a minute available, so I tried what follows.

Now, one thing that also intrigues me immensely is “Powerage” and LTBR tone. Both of them.

So I replayed rhythm and re-soloed this track trying to capture a bit of that spirit, although re-listening to this it sounds more Flick of the Switch-ish probably. Don’t know, can’t say. The delay I put on the solo guitar was meant to be more LTBR-ish.

Now, the interesting – maybe – thing is the fact that I think Angus on LTBR was “overloading” the input channel of his amplifier somehow. NOT with a distortion pedal, but more with pure “volume boost”, so basically a unit of some sort (might be already the Schaffer-Vega Diversity Systtem, that had a “boost” feature on the unit that would in fact “volume boost” the input signal). Might have been anything. So what I did, is to use a pedal I have (and will show to you) that has “volume boost” only, NO gain! No dirt here: just volume. It’s the same as the famous “Klon” pedal, which I also have and tried prior to this other one. But this one is a little more “colored” and I liked it more.

I used the lower input of my 2203 (the 100 watt Master Volume Lead) and blasted the volume of the pedal to overload the Marshall input signal. This is the result, both on the rhythm guitars and the solo. (more…)
